Oh hey! I know that guy!

It’s A.K.Wirru, I’ve seen him around at the Sydney cons and spoken to him a couple of times. He’s represented Australia at the World Cosplay Summit twice.

Fun fact about that costume: the boobs are hollow and he uses them as pockets XD

god I really wish people weren't so fucking judgmental and cruel towards diabetic people who still eat a lot of sugar. partially because it's not their business, and because how much they clearly don't understand how diabetes works.

ashenprincx

In case you didn't know, diabetes is when, for whatever reason, your body doesn't have enough insulin. Both types of diabetes can be caused by many things- genetics are the largest deciding factor, but it can also be influenced by things like autoimmune and diseases stress (and things that cause stress, like poverty or being a minority). It is a myth that you can give yourself diabetes by eating sugar, and a myth that you can stop it by dieting.

Type 1 happens when your body can't make enough/any insulin, and type two happens when your cells become insulin resistant and there isn't enough going around.

But what is insulin, and what does it do? Insulin is a hormone your body produces to aid in absorbing glucose (sugar) in your blood, allowing it to enter your cells and provide energy needed to live. This means that when there is no insulin, or insulin resistance is high enough, your cells can't absorb glucose. This is essentially the same as starving, because your cells aren't getting any energy. This causes not just a blood glucose to rise (which itself can cause damage to your body), but also makes you body slam the hunger button and craving for sugar- because it wants energy as fast as possible. Going through this repeatedly (a constant occurrence for many diabetics) is also super stressful on the body, and prompts it to want to gain weight as a survival strategy against starving.

So yeah no shit diabetic people often crave sugar and are often fat- their body is desperately trying to make sure they survive ✌️

non diabetics super encouraged to read and rb btw just please don't derail or be disrespectful

Are you disabled and do you like visiting zoos? If yes, I want your feedback!

I am giving a presentation this fall on small/easy things that zoos and aquariums can do to be more disability friendly (above and beyond simply being ADA compliant). I’m drawing from my own experiences as well as all the information contributed to the accessibility spreadsheet.

I realized that there’s probably a lot of feedback and great ideas I’m missing because the spreadsheet asks for specifics about facilities, and folk might not remember where something occurred or know enough details to feel like they should contribute. I want to fix that!

So, if you’ve had accessibility issues at zoos and aquariums, and want to share your thoughts on the problems or the solutions, I’d love to hear it. I want as much information as possible to inform this presentation.

Please feel free to comment here or message me! No facility location / dates needed (but if you want to include that, I can add your thoughts to the spreadsheet too).

To recap what I’m seeing in the comments:

Free / low cost tweaks:

  • Bench placement (near exhibits, where you can see, good distribution, near hills)
  • Bench locations listed on maps
  • Water bottle fill locations listed on maps
  • Shade areas listed on maps
  • Maps with steep hills / uneven pathways / alternate routes clearly marked
  • Captions on educational videos
  • Allowing outside food

Things that cost some money:

  • Signage for alternate routes / water fill stations / shade and quiet spaces
  • Larger font signs / repositioning signs at lower eye lines
  • Additional benches
  • Seating near lines or queues
  • Additional water fill stations
  • Misters / cooling stations

Things to consider during renovation / construction

  • Path width, texture, and grade
  • Fencing heights for seated people
  • Seating with backs
  • Signage design for seated users that isn’t just aimed at kids
  • Shade areas (including from parking)
  • Width of indoor areas like gift shops and aquariums
  • Steps in front of exhibits preventing wheelchair access
  • Door width / weight
  • ECV rentals in multiple places at big facilities

These are all really good input! What else should be on the list?

My two big ones:

1. A clearly labeled, easy to find phone number for guest services or security that can be called if assistance is needed. I’ve done that at zoos before when my knee flared and I needed assistance to the exit - but it only was viable because I knew how to navigate the phone tree to ask for help.

2. The addition of service dog relief / watering stations that are clearly marked on the map. A zoo isn’t really accessible if you have to walk back through the entire facility to relieve their dog outside the gates.

Bringing this back since I’m giving a presentation about exactly this to zoo industry peeps next week! Please tell me what you’d want to see (even if it’s already on the list) so I can make sure it’s represented!

Hey... so there now appear to be AI-generated science articles on .org websites that are giving biologically incorrect "facts" on basic, for-children topics

The title is "Are There Freshwater Octopus Species?" which should be an incredibly straightforward thing to answer: No.

The article starts out decent:

"Despite their many fascinating features, there is no evidence to suggest that octopuses can survive in freshwater environments."

Cool. Okay. Next section.

"While most people associate octopuses with the ocean, there are some species that can survive in freshwater environments."

Wait. What?

"Freshwater octopuses belong to the genus Amphioctopus, which includes several species that are found in brackish water and estuaries. These cephalopods have adapted to life in freshwater environments and have been observed in rivers, streams, and even hydrothermal vents."

NO NO NO.

One species of freshwater octopus is Amphioctopus aegina...Another species, Amphioctopus marginatus...

THESE GUYS LIVE IN THE OCEAN.
[Scrolls 2 more sections]

Freshwater octopuses are still a topic of debate among scientists. While some researchers claim that they do exist, others argue that there is not enough literature to support their existence.

The use of an octopus for this is particularly wild for us Zillenials who remember the pacific tree octopus from internet safety class

so guys turns out that being raised by queer people alienates me from the queer experience. probably not a good thing

thermodynamic-comedian

i genuinely have not experienced most of the "defining" moments yall talk about.

i never came out to my parents because my parents never assumed i was cishet.

i never did an "am i gay?" quiz because i knew the answer didn't matter, really.

i never "found out" about trans people, my parent has identified as gender neutral my entire life.

i never cried or even felt any big emotions when i found out i was queer. it was just like huh. cool.

my point here is not that i'm sad about having grown up in a queer-friendly enviroment. my point is that the fact that i don't relate to queer experiences as a queer person might imply that we still define queerness based on suffering.

i'm not saying that queer people who have suffered should stop talking about it. all i'm really saying is that if you want to define queerness based on joy instead of misery, you have to accept that queerness is not a big deal to everybody. you have to accept that not every queer person is going to relate to "queer experiences".

catgirltail

At the end of the day, that ^, feels like what a lot of us have been fighting for. A world were it is no big deal. And I'm so happy someone has already gotten to experience that.
